WASHINGTON – As they develop the habits, skills and other traits needed for future success, young people from age 14 to 21 have a limited window of opportunity. That’s why, when school is not in session, out-of-school time organizations provide supervised programs for young people and expose them to career options that prepare them better to enter and succeed in the workforce.

WASHINGTON – The pandemic worsened disparities in economic outcomes across racial, ethnic and gender lines. Today, the U.S. Department of Labor is announcing a $45 million funding availability to help people in marginalized and underrepresented populations overcome barriers to access career and technical education programs that can help connect them with good-paying jobs.

These disparities in access to unemployment insurance exposed serious real-world shortcomings in the outdated systems used to deliver state and territories unemployment insurance benefits.

WASHINGTON – In response to the March 25, 2020, reauthorization of the Older Americans Act through the Supporting Older Americans Act of 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor today published two notices to revise its Senior Community Service Employment Program regulations to conform to the changes. 

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced an initial award of $2,968,350 to support disaster-relief employment for individuals to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts, and to provide employment and training services in northern California after devastating wildfires between July and October 2021, which burned extensively throughout the national forests there.

WASHINGTON – In 2021, the pandemic forced 17 employers in Maine’s coastal region, including Abbott Labs, B&M Baked Beans and Country Manor Nursing Home, to lay off more than 500 workers, which has prompted the U.S. Department of Labor to award a grant to help prepare these workers for new employment opportunities.  

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced an incremental award of $1.7 million to the Government of Guam to support continued disaster-relief employment and workforce development in response to the effects of the pandemic in the U.S. territory.

As demand soared, the U.S. Department of Labor provided instructions to states to administer payments under several programs authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.
