Announces $13 Million U.S. Initiative on Prevention and Rehabilitation

WASHINGTON—U.S. and foreign officials gathered here today for a two-day conference at the invitation of Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao to take action to eliminate the use of child soldiers and to rehabilitate those caught in such forced recruitment. Chao announced a $13 million initiative to support programs to counter the problem and to help former child soldiers rebuild their lives.

Kansas City, Missouri - The U.S. Department of Labor obtained a consent order on April 29, 2003 ordering the president and owner of Netsource, Inc. of Olathe, Kansas and the fiduciary of the company’s Simple IRA Plan to restore $13,661.38 to the plan. The company was a computer consulting company that developed software for clients.

Atlanta, Georgia - The U.S. Department of Labor has sued Elk Valley Professional Affiliates, Inc. (EVPA) of Fayetteville, Tennessee and its former corporate executives for imprudently using $1,075,892.42 of the assets of the employee stock ownership plan to purchase company stock at prices in excess of fair market value and to pay expenses related to the sale of the company.

Labor Department Signs Settlement Agreement with
Swissport USA, Inc. to Remedy Hiring Discrimination

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Labor announced today that it has entered into a settlement agreement with Swissport USA, Inc. (formerly Dynair). The settlement resolves the department’s allegations that Swissport discriminatorily refused to hire female and minority job applicants into ramp worker positions, at the Anchorage, Alaska Airport.

“The settlement reached on behalf of these workers reflects the Department’s continued commitment to remedying unfair hiring practices and keeping workplaces free of discrimination,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced the appointment of Jose (Joe) A. Lira as director of the Department of Labor’s Office of Small Business Programs (OSBP).

Labor Department Offers Employers Free Database
of Qualified, Disabled Student Job Seekers

WASHINGTON—Government and private sector employers may take advantage of a free resource to identify college students and recent graduates with disabilities for their summer and permanent job openings, U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced today. The department’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), in cooperation with the Department of Defense, now offers a database of more than 1,600 job seekers with disabilities through its Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP).
