OSHA alliance with West Virginia University Safety & Health Extension, West Virginia State Consultation Program promotes workplace safety, health

CHARLESTON, WV – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has signed a two-year alliance with West Virginia University Safety & Health Extension and West Virginia State Consultation Program to provide safety and health information, guidance and training to OSHA Training Institute Education Center participants.

Alliance members will share information on occupational safety and health laws and standards; national, regional and local emphasis programs; workers’ rights and employers’ responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

“This alliance represents our collaborative commitment and effort to provide education and training to improve the safety of workers in West Virginia,” said OSHA Area Director Prentice Cline in Charleston, West Virginia.

The alliance aims to:

  • Prevent exposure to prevalent safety and health hazards in general and construction industries.
  • Encourage participation in OSHA initiatives, courses and events at West Virginia University Safety & Health Extension.
  • Develop and disseminate communication materials on common general industry and construction hazards and violations in West Virginia, and publicize the results. 
  • Educate stakeholders and encourage the voluntary use of the free, confidential on-site consultation services provided by West Virginia OSHA Consultation.

OSHA’s Alliance Program works with groups committed to worker safety and health to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. These groups include unions, consulates, trade or professional organizations, businesses, faith- and community-based organizations, and educational institutions. OSHA and the groups work together to develop compliance assistance tools and resources, share information with workers and employers, and educate workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA’s role is to help ensure these conditions for America’s working men and women by setting and enforcing standards, and providing training, education and assistance.
