U.S. Department of Labor and Associated General Contractors of Georgia Invite Employers to Join Winter Weather Safety Stand-Down

ATLANTA, GA – The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Georgia have joined for a Winter Weather Safety Stand-Down scheduled to take place November 5-9, 2018, to stress the importance of working safely outdoors during the winter months.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries in the construction industry. During the winter, frigid temperatures, precipitation, strong winds, and slick surfaces combine to create risks of serious or fatal injuries to employees who work outdoors.

To help employers understand and prevent winter hazards, OSHA and AGC of Georgia are encouraging employers across the state to stop work voluntarily for an hour to train employees on cold weather-related job hazards, and review best practices.

During the stand-down, employers should also explain the importance of wearing proper clothing and personal protection for cold, wet, and windy conditions; how to recognize and respond to signs of cold stress; the use of proper first aid; and when to seek medical assistance.

Visit the AGC of Georgia website to register to participate. For more information, contact Christi Griffin in OSHA's Atlanta-West Area Office at 678-903-7301; Bill Fulcher in the Atlanta-East Area Office at 770-493-6644; or Margo Westmoreland in the Savannah Area Office at 912-652-4393.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to help ensure these conditions for America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards, and providing training, education, and assistance.
