U.S. Department of Labor Fines Pennsylvania Manufacturer For Exposing Employees to Safety and Health Hazards

HATFIELD, PA - The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Prime Packaging Partners LLC, a dog treat manufacturer, for exposing employees to safety and health hazards at its Hatfield facility. OSHA proposed $180,685 in penalties.

OSHA inspected the Hatfield, Pennsylvania, facility in response to a complaint that an employee suffered an amputation from unguarded saw blades. OSHA cited the company for 19 violations, including failing to implement lockout/tagout procedures; blocking electrical panels; exposing workers to confined space, machine guarding, and electrical hazards; and failing to develop a hazard communication program.

“These injuries can be prevented if the employer uses appropriate safety measures to protect workers from amputations,” said Jean Kulp, OSHA Allentown Area Office Director.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA’s role is to ensure these conditions for America’s working men and women by setting and enforcing standards, and providing training, education and assistance.
