The owner of the now-defunct engineering support service company in Ronkonkoma, New York, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for the Eastern District of New York for embezzlement of $239,160 from the company’s pension plan.

Alejandro Salas was the owner of Craftsmen Corporation, 4175 Veterans Memorial Highway in Ronkonkoma and a trustee of its defined benefit pension plan, which covered 29 employees.

Salas was arraigned on a complaint filed September 13, 1996, alleging that he embezzled about $239,160 from the pension plan, which had been instituted in 1985 to provide retirement benefits to Craftsmen employees. From February 1993 to August 1994, Salas took money out of the plan’s account with Chemical bank and deposited the funds into the company’s operating account. The money was used to run the business.

The defendant was indicted on Feb. 25. This criminal case resulted from an investigation conducted by the Department of Labor’s New York Regional Office of the Pension and Welfare Benefit Administration. It is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
