The Office of Management and Budget is seeking comments on a proposed revision to the 1980 Standard Occupational Classification SOC system. Reference.1980 Standard Occupational Classification Manual. Background. The SOC Revision Policy Committee has made final recommendations for revising the 1980 SOC's occupational units and aggregate groups. The committee developed a new occupational classification system that will cover all jobs in the national economy including occupations in the public private and military sectors. The release of the revised SOC will have long-term implications for virtually all workforce development programs. According to this Federal Register notice "All Federal agencies that collect occupational data will use the new system similarly all State and local government agencies are strongly encouraged to use this national system to promote a common language for categorizing occupations in the world of work." For example the O NET project plans to adopt the revised SOC once it is finalized. Other programs that plan to use this new classification system include the Occupational Employment Statistics OES and the 2000 Census. Action Required. Please share this TEIN and attachment with individuals within your organization that use the SOC.
