US Department of Labor recognizes agency to oversee Guam's Registered Apprenticeship program

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the formal recognition of the Guam Department of Labor as the state apprenticeship agency authorized to oversee the territory's Registered Apprenticeship system.

"Guam's now federally recognized Registered Apprenticeship program will expand career pathways that lead to good jobs for the territory's workforce," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Participants in Guam's apprenticeship program will receive a nationally recognized credential, and employers will benefit from a highly skilled workforce that is trained to industry standards."

The Guam Department of Labor has worked closely with the Office of Apprenticeship of the Labor Department's Employment and Training Administration to develop a Registered Apprenticeship system. ETA's recognition of the Guam Department of Labor as a state apprenticeship agency will support the territory's efforts to improve opportunities for the local workforce through the Registered Apprenticeship "earn and learn" model, which prepares participants for highly skilled careers while allowing them to earn a paycheck.

In July 2011, Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo submitted formal documentation requesting ETA's recognition of the Guam Department of Labor as the agency to facilitate apprenticeship programs and agreements.

"We're finding every way to bring career opportunities to as many Guamanians as possible," said Gov. Calvo. "We're finding every way to enhance the workforce with high-paying jobs for Guamanians."

In addition to Guam, ETA's Office of Apprenticeship has formally recognized apprenticeship agencies in 25 states and the District of Columbia. More information about Registered Apprenticeship can be found online at http://www.doleta.gov/oa.
