SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending July 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 398,000, a decrease of 24,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 422,000. The 4-week moving average was 413,750, a decrease of 8,500 from the previous week's revised average of 422,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending July 16, a 0.1 percentage point decrease from the prior week's revised rate of 3.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 16 was 3,703,000, a decrease of 17,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,720,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,721,000, a decrease of 5,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,726,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 366,578 in the week ending July 23, a decrease of 103,503 from the previous week. There were 413,679 initial claims in the comparable week in 2010.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent during the week ending July 16, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,735,896, a decrease of 47,420 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.6 percent and the volume was 4,554,316.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending July 9 was 7,645,601, an increase of 320,152 from the previous week.
Extended benefits were available in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia during the week ending July 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,883 in the week ending July 16, a decrease of 680 from the prior week. There were 2,639 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 194 from the preceding week.
There were 24,961 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 9, an increase of 734 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 38,300, an increase of 2,028 from the prior week.
States reported 3,172,428 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending July 9, an increase of 18,427 from the prior week. There were 3,285,271 claimants in the comparable week in 2010. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 9 were in Puerto Rico (5.1), Pennsylvania (4.3), New Jersey (4.1), Oregon (4.1), Alaska (3.9) California (3.9), Connecticut (3.9), Nevada (3.8), Rhode Island (3.8), and Wisconsin (3.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 16 were in California (+20,813), Georgia (+6,567), North Carolina (+5,755), South Carolina (+5,181), and Florida (+4,236) while the largest decreases were in New York (-17,377), Minnesota (-10,352), Michigan (-7,039), Ohio (-5,037), and Pennsylvania (-3,347).
