US Department of Labor announces more than $543,000 to continue aid to Missouri workers impacted by base realignment and closure

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a $543,705 National Emergency Grant supplemental award to Missouri to continue re-employment services to about 400 civilian defense workers affected by 2005 Base Realignment and Closure actions.

"Civilian workers who support our armed forces play an important role in the defense of our nation, and they deserve our support when layoffs happen," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "These Missourians need to continue receiving the employment and training services that will help them re-enter the workforce with good jobs that offer opportunities for advancement."

On June 28, 2005, the department awarded a $1 million National Emergency Grant to Missouri to develop a strategic plan addressing the workforce and economic issues resulting from the closing of multiple military installations across the state. On Nov. 7, 2007, another National Emergency Grant was awarded in the amount of $1,040,969 to continue strategic planning and begin service delivery to workers dislocated from Defense Finance and Accounting Service facilities in Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo. The funds being announced today represent a third grant.
