U.S. Department of Labor announces $1.4 million grant to assist workers affected by paper industry layoffs in Oregon

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,416,970 grant to assist approximately 200 workers affected by layoffs at Boise Cascade LLC in St. Helens, Ore.

"This grant will allow affected workers in Oregon to access the services and training necessary to allow them to upgrade current skills or seek careers in new occupations," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

Today's grant will be awarded to the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development. The grant will be operated by the Oregon Consortium and Oregon Workforce Alliance, a nonprofit public/private partnership providing career training and job placement services. Affected workers will have access to the full array of dislocated worker services. These may include skills assessment, basic skills training, individual career counseling and occupational skills training.

On Nov. 17, 2008, Boise Cascade LLC notified workers of impending layoffs related to the permanent ceasing of pulp production at the plant and a significant reduction in paper production capacity. Layoffs occurred on Dec. 21, 2008.

Of the $1,416,970 announced today, $599,103 will be released initially. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

Resources for this grant are from the secretary of labor's discretionary fund under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
