Former Glass Ceiling Commission head Rene A. Redwood has been appointed as special assistant to Deputy Assistant Secretary Shirley J. Wilcher, head of the U. S. Labor Department's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP). Redwood will work closely with corporations to continue breaking through artificial barriers preventing women and minorities from advancing to top executive positions.

"We are extremely fortunate to have Redwood join us. As the former director of the Glass Ceiling Commission, Redwood's expertise and experience will be invaluable as OFCCP pursues its commitment to encourage corporate America to use the many skills minorities and women have to offer," said Wilcher.

"Real progress to increase representation of minorities and women in the executive suites demands action by government and business to eliminate artificial and attitudinal barriers and to implement affirmative action. While we have witnessed some progress, much remains to be done in this area," Wilcher said.

Before joining OFCCP, Redwood was executive director of the 21-member Glass Ceiling Commission, a position she held since May 1994. Before her appointment to the commission, Redwood was district office director for Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). Redwood received a bachelor's degree from Tufts University (1985).
