Director Named To Policy and Research Office Of Federal Employee Benefits Agency

Washington, DC - Joseph S. Piacentini has been named to the senior executive position of chief economist and director of the Office of Policy and Research with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) in Washington, DC.

In this capacity, Piacentini oversees EBSA’s program of economic research and statistics and provides statistical and actuarial support to all components of the agency relating to retirement, health and other benefit programs governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). He is responsible for EBSA’s pension and health benefits policy development and analysis, related legislative activity and economic analysis of EBSA regulatory policies.

Piacentini joined EBSA in 1996 and has served as the agency’s deputy director in the Office of Research and Regulatory Analysis and in other senior level positions.

Prior to that, he worked at Aetna Life and Casualty from 1991 to 1996 and held the positions of director for pension issues and director for health issues. Previously, he was a research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

Piacentini holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Dartmouth College and a Master of Arts in applied economics from Johns Hopkins University. He is a native of Springfield, Massachusetts.
