WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today awarded $2 million to Ohio to support employment and training services for workers affected by the closure of the Pixelle Specialty Solutions LLC Chillicothe Paper Mill.

In the week ending September 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 231,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 263,000 to 264,000. The 4-week moving average was 240,000, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 240,500 to 240,750.

In the week ending September 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 263,000, an increase of 27,000 from the previous week's revised level. This is the highest level for initial claims since October 23, 2021 when it was 268,000. The previous week's level was revised down by 1,000 from 237,000 to 236,000. The 4-week moving average was 240,500, an increase of 9,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 250 from 231,000 to 230,750.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration today issued guidance to states on how to use Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grants to bolster artificial intelligence literacy and training across the public workforce system.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced an incremental award of more than $1.3 million to continue employment and training services in response to automotive layoffs throughout Michigan.

In September 2023, the department issued Michigan a National Dislocated Worker Grant of up to $4,000,000 – with an initial award of $1,333,333, to enable the state to provide employment and training services to help displaced workers across the state affected by the impacts of automotive industry layoffs. 

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General today announced the successful recovery of approximately $520 million in suspected fraudulent unemployment insurance payments made during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

These funds, which had been frozen by a financial institution, have now been returned to the state of Maryland as a result of a coordinated recovery effort involving the department’s Office of Inspector General, the Employment and Training Administration, and Maryland’s Labor Department.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today awarded an additional $4 million to help support continued disaster-relief jobs, as well as employment and training services for Kentucky residents suffering from the aftermath of severe storms over the past year. 

In the week ending July 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 218,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 217,000. The 4-week moving average was 221,000, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 224,500.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of $1.8 million to the Technical College System of Georgia to support employment and training services for people affected by layoffs at Georgia-Pacific LLC. 

On May 14, 2025, Georgia-Pacific announced the permanent closure of their Cedar Springs containerboard processing mill, which will result in a mass layoff that is expected to begin Aug. 1, 2025. Georgia-Pacific estimates that 535 individuals will be impacted by the closure.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of $1 million in grant funding to Arkansas for cleanup and recovery activities after severe storms caused extensive damage and flooding in April. 

Between April 2-22, 2025, a strong weather system struck Arkansas, bringing severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding. The storm caused widespread devastation, destroying homes and businesses, displacing residents, causing utility outages, and disrupting critical public services throughout the state.

In the week ending July 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 217,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 221,000. The 4-week moving average was 224,500, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 229,500.
