AMES, IA – The U.S. Department of Labor will host an outreach event in Ames on April 17, 2018, for former and current nuclear weapons workers and their survivors. Federal representatives from the Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC) will discuss the new Special Exposure Cohort class of employees at the Ames Laboratory.
The event will take place at the Holiday Inn Ames Conference Center at Iowa State University, 2609 University Boulevard. The presentation will begin at 9 a.m., followed by staff availabilities from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All times are CDT.
Staff from the DEEOIC Cleveland District Office will provide a brief presentation about the new class, as well as information about the medical benefits available to approved claimants under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). Representatives of the Department of Labor’s Office of the Ombudsman for the EEOICPA, the Ombudsman to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for the EEOICPA, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Former Worker Medical Screening Program will also be on-hand.
Following the presentation, staff will answer questions regarding existing claims, provide claim status updates, and help workers file new claims.
The EEOICPA provides compensation and medical benefits to employees diagnosed with qualifying illnesses as a result of their work in the nuclear weapons industry. Survivors of qualified workers may also be entitled to benefits. To date, the program has paid over $258 million in EEOICPA compensation and medical benefits to eligible Iowa claimants and over $14.7 billion nationwide.
