US Department of Labor updates online financial literacy toolkit supporting disabled workers with resources for families, caregivers

Includes new section for service providers, support staff

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced significant updates to its online resource offering financial education information and practical guidance to help disabled workers build economic mobility and independence.

The updated toolkit, Secure Your Financial Future: A Toolkit for Individuals with Disabilities, features a new section geared toward service providers, direct support professionals, and family members – all people who may play a critical role in supporting workers with disabilities as they navigate careers and financial planning.

“Americans with disabilities deserve the opportunity to participate in President Trump’s Golden Age of America, and that means being able to work and save for goals of their choice,” said Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy Julie Hocker. “The updates to the ‘Secure Your Financial Future’ toolkit provide vital resources that empower disabled workers to make informed financial decisions as they pursue rewarding work opportunities. Financial independence is central to the American Dream and ensures that the talent and potential of all Americans can be fully realized.”

Developed by the department’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, Employee Benefits Security Administration, and Employment and Training Administration, the “Secure Your Financial Future” toolkit acknowledges the unique decisions Americans with disabilities face regarding work and financial security. The toolkit includes extensive guidance for achieving financial wellness at every stage of the employment life cycle: preparing for, starting, maintaining, changing or losing, and retiring from a job.

The updated toolkit ensures that workers with disabilities and those who may support them have access to practical, easy-to-use tools to set and achieve financial goals, understand the connection between work and benefits, and make informed choices about saving and spending. Additions to the toolkit include:

  • FAQs about working with legal guardians or representative payees.
  • Financial planning tools and worksheets, including information about ABLE accounts.
  • Quick-reference guides on money management, disability benefits, and other topics.
  • Resources to support conversations about saving, budgeting, and financial goal setting.

“The U.S. Department of Labor is focused on empowering all Americans to attain retirement security and employment success,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employee Benefits Security Daniel Aronowitz. “We recognize that people with disabilities have unique economic decisions to make. By updating the ‘Secure Your Financial Future’ toolkit, we are making sure people with disabilities have the information and opportunities to build toward a secure retirement at every stage of their career.”
