This project will promote greater compliance with labor law and increase workers’ access to judicial and non-judicial remedies for labor violations in Armenia, with a focus on the mining and service sectors.
The Problem
Since 2004, reforms to the Armenian Labor Code have weakened institutions vital for the promotion and enforcement of labor laws. As a result, workers have been more vulnerable to exploitation, and a large informal sector has arisen. In 2019, the government began taking steps to strengthen labor institutions, but much remains to be done.
Our Strategy
To improve labor law compliance and workers’ access to judicial and non-judicial remedies for labor violations, this project will:
- Work with labor market institutions (labor inspectorate, courts, and workers’ and employers’ organizations) to build a strategic compliance system, with an emphasis on occupational safety and health.
- Partner with stakeholders across government ministries, trade unions, and employers’ organizations to promote participation in labor compliance processes and strengthen access to remedies for workplace issues.
Results
To date, the Armenian labor authorities have detected 218 labor violations during project-related inspections.
