An overview of the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) industry in the Philippines and its use of child labor with case study.

A high-level review of interventions (projects and initiatives) that aim to address child labor and poor working conditions (either directly or indirectly) in the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) sector across different minerals. Report includes information on existing and completed projects funded primarily by international donors, but not those funded/implemented by governments or the private sector. Information gathered primarily through desk research and interviews conducted by Levin Sources for the ILO.

This report focuses on an intrinsic case study in Ghana that was carried out aiming to get a deeper understanding of the experiences of children who had stopped working at the mines, what their motivations for working at the mines were and the factors that contributed to quitting work at mines.

This document is a Training Materials and Guide for facilitators in training key government agencies and other relevant stakeholders on law enforcement and policy implementation to reduce child labour and improve working conditions in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) operations and other sectors in Ghana.

ILO-produced video on the dark reality of child labour and poor working conditions in the Philippines. Funded by the United States Department of Labor, the project reached out to mining communities in Camarines Norte and South Cotabato, Philippines to transition from the informal economy and to shape a future without child labour that leaves no one behind through decent work.

This sustainability plan for the CARING Gold Mining Project is to provide a frame for evolving a long-term strategy that will be used as guidance for key stakeholders to sustain the achievements of the project. This report documents the processes and outcomes of the sustainability plan workshop held on December 4, 2019 in Accra, Ghana.

The CARING Gold Mining Project’s overall goal is to address child labor and working condition issues in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) globally, and in Ghana and the Philippines --its pilot countries. It does so by pursuing four outcomes, the first three to be carried out in the pilot countries and the fourth one on a global scale.

Ghana is the largest producer of gold in western Africa. Its mines provide local families with the a meagre income extracted under dangerous working conditions. “Dreams of Gold” follows the stories of three children rescued from one of the most hazardous forms of child labour, mining for gold.

This pre-KAP study is part of the CARING Gold Mining Project of ILO and Ban Toxics, which will mobilize stakeholders to address issues of child labor and poor working conditions in ASGM in the Phillipine municipalities of Labo and Paracale, Camarines Norte and T'boli, South Cotabato.

This pre-KAP survey assessed the extent of knowledge, attitudes and practice on child labor and related working conditions in ASGM in Ghana, as well as identified gaps in behaviorial and attitudinal change towards the elimination of child labor and the improvement of working conditions in the ASGM sector.
