U.S. Department of Labor announces $720,000 in aid to Indiana to assist with recovery efforts from autumn storms and flooding

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $720,000 grant to the state of Indiana to create temporary jobs for cleanup and recovery efforts as a result of storms and flooding in September.

"The storms that hit Indiana this fall continue to affect Hoosiers up and down the state," said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Brent R. Orrell. "Today's grant will provide those affected with temporary jobs to help communities recover from the damage caused by the storms and flooding."

The grant, awarded to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, will provide funding for the creation of temporary employment to assist in cleanup and recovery efforts as well as provide food, clothing, shelter and other humanitarian assistance for disaster victims. Funds may also be used to provide core, intensive and retraining services upon completion of the temporary jobs component for participants who cannot return to work.

On Sept. 23, 2008, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared 28 counties in Indiana as eligible for FEMA's Public Assistance program. This grant will target the following 12 counties in Indiana: Fayette, Floyd, Lake, LaPorte, Newton, Orange, Perry, Porter, Scott, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick.
