Delegates Represent Diverse Expertise

WASHINGTON--Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced the 200 appointed delegates to the 2002 National Summit on Retirement Savings scheduled to take place February 27 - March 1, 2002 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C.

"The SAVER Summit is a unique opportunity to encourage Americans to save and plan for the future," Chao stated. "It is my privilege today to announce the distinguished group of delegates appointed to the 2002 SAVER Summit. Their knowledge and experience will ensure a meaningful discussion of an issue that is vital to our nation.

"The challenge to the Summit delegates is to draw from their diverse expertise in developing strategies that encourage people to save for retirement through retirement plans and personal savings."

Approximately 250 statutory and appointed delegates will participate in the Summit. The statutory delegates include the Congressional leadership and officials of the executive branch. The 200 appointed delegates, half appointed by President Bush and the Republican leaders in Congress and half appointed by the Democrat leaders in Congress, come from diverse fields representing state and local governments, professionals in the field of employee benefits employers, labor unions, the general public and members of Congress.

The 2002 summit, mandated by the Savings Are Vital To Everyone's Retirement (SAVER) Act, is co-hosted by the President and Congressional leaders. Secretary Chao is planning the event.

At the Summit, the delegates will examine ways to educate and motivate Americans to plan and save for retirement throughout their lifetime. In breakout sessions, the delegates will work on action plans designed to address generational issues of the Millennial Generation, Generation X, Baby Boomers and the Silent Generation.
