Department of Labor to provide benefits outreach in Overland Park, Kansas for current, former nuclear weapons workers

WASHINGTON – The Department of Labor will host an information session in Overland Park, Kansas, on May 8, 2024, for current and former nuclear weapons workers and their families employed at covered facilities on the benefits available under the federal Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. 

“The Department of Labor encourages all current and former nuclear weapons workers and their families in the Kansas City area to attend this event to learn more about eligibility for benefits under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act,” said Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Director Rachel Pond. “Event attendees can file new claims or obtain information about existing claims.”  

Department representatives will be available to answer questions, assist in filing claims or provide updates on existing claims. Services are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Open to the public, the event requires no pre-registration to attend.

The department’s Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act provides lump sum compensation and medical benefits to current and former nuclear weapons workers whose illness is the result of working in the nuclear weapons industry. The program has paid over $53 million in compensation and medical benefits to claimants living in Kansas, $310 million in compensation and medical benefits to claimants living in Missouri, and more than $25.7 billion nationwide.
