U.S. Department of Labor and Mexican consulate in New Orleans sign letter of intent to provide training, education and outreach in Louisiana and Mississippi

NEW ORLEANS -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division and the Consulado de Mexico have signed a letter of intent in New Orleans to coordinate efforts in educating and informing workers in Louisiana and Mississippi about the worker protections under labor laws administered by the division.

A signing ceremony was held at the Consulate of Mexico office on Convention Center Boulevard in New Orleans.

“We welcome this opportunity to join with the Mexican consulate to promote compliance with wage and hour laws,” said Cynthia Watson, regional administrator for the Wage and Hour Division’s Southwest region. “Through our collaborative efforts, workers will be educated on their workplace rights and will receive information on how to exercise those rights.”

Under the letter of intent, the Wage and Hour Division will train Consulado de Mexico staff to assure they have a working knowledge of statutes enforced by the division, including the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and its child labor provisions, the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, the field sanitation standards under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the temporary non-immigrant agricultural guestworker (H-2A) program under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

The Wage and Hour Division also will provide compliance information to constituents of the Consulado General de Mexico on relevant topics, such as minimum wage requirements, overtime provisions, child labor standards, farm labor contracting, field sanitation and migrant labor housing.

The Consulado de Mexico will act as a liaison between the Wage and Hour Division and workers in Louisiana and Mississippi to provide information, guidance and access to training resources to help those workers understand their rights.

For more information on compliance assistance or labor laws, such as the FLSA or the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, call the Wage and Hour Division’s New Orleans District Office at 504-589-6171 or the department’s toll-free helpline at 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243).
