US Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division, Consulate of Mexico to sign agreement Sept. 5, in Des Moines to protect Iowa and Nebraska workers

DES MOINES, Iowa -- To protect the rights of Missouri and Kansas workers, Michael Staebell, district director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division in Des Moines, and Jorge Ernesto Espejel Montes, consul of Mexico, will participate in a signing ceremony Thursday, Sept. 5, to formalize an agreement establishing an understanding to promote workers’ rights.

The agreement establishes a collaborative relationship to provide information, guidance and access to education and training resources for Mexican nationals working in Iowa and Nebraska. The Mexican Consulate and the Wage and Hour Division area offices in Des Moines and Omaha, Neb., will develop joint ways of communicating information to workers and employers to promote their rights and understanding of the responsibilities of employers under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

“All individuals employed in the United States are required to be paid in accordance with the FLSA and applicable wage laws,” Staebell said. “Many times, Mexican nationals and other immigrant workers do not know their rights under the law.”
