Department of Labor, Consulate of Mexico to sign worker protection agreements Aug. 26 in Chicago during Labor Rights Week

CHICAGO -- The U.S. Department of Labor and the Mexican Consulate will sign agreements to protect the rights of workers in Illinois and Wisconsin. The ceremony will be held on Monday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. CDT, at the Mexican Consulate in observance of National Labor Rights Week, which is Aug. 26-31.

Carlos Jimenez Macias, consul general of Mexico in Chicago, Nick Walters, regional administrator of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Chicago, and Karen Chaikin, regional administrator for the department’s Wage and Hour Division, will participate in the ceremony. The National Labor Relations Board and U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will also participate in the event.

“Labor Rights Week and the signing of these alliances are initiatives to educate Mexican nationals and other Spanish speaking workers about their rights to a safe workplace,” said Walters.

Both the OSHA and Wage and Hour agreements establish a collaborative relationship to provide low wage at-risk workers in Illinois and Wisconsin with information, guidance and access to education and training resources. Additionally, they will develop information and engage in outreach to promote workers’ rights and to help them understand U.S. domestic laws, in particular the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act.

“All individuals working in the United States in jobs subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act must be paid in accordance with the FLSA and other applicable wage laws,” said Chaikin.
