US Department of Labor and Consulate of Mexico to sign worker protection agreement, Aug. 26 in Indianapolis as part of Labor Rights Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division and the Mexican Consulate will sign an agreement to protect the rights of workers in Kentucky, and portions of Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. The signing ceremony will be held Monday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Mexican Consulate in observance of National Labor Rights Week, which is Aug. 26-31.

Juan Manuel Solana Morales, consul general of Mexico in Indianapolis and Wage and Hour Division district directors Patricia Lewis of Indianapolis and Karen Garnett of Louisville, Ky., will participate in the signing ceremony.

The alliance establishes a collaborative relationship to provide low wage at-risk workers in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois with information, guidance, and access to education and training resources to promote workers’ rights and to help them in understand U.S. domestic law and the rights and responsibilities of both employees and employers under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

“All individuals working in the United States in jobs subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act must be paid in accordance with the FLSA and as well as other applicable wage laws,” said Patricia Lewis.

The Mexican Consulate and the Wage and Hour Offices in Indianapolis and Louisville will work together to combine resources and coordinate efforts to develop educational material on workers’ rights and to develop ways of communicating such information to low wage at-risk workers and their employers.
