U.S. Department of Labor to host town hall meetings in Simi Valley, Calif., Sept. 22 and 23 to assist nuclear weapons workers

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor will host town hall meetings Sept. 22 and 23 in Simi Valley, Calif., to provide information about the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). Department officials will present details about a new class of former employees of Area IV of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) recently added to the EEOICPA’s Special Exposure Cohort (SEC), as well as an overview of Parts B and E of the EEOICPA. The department’s Traveling Resource Center staff will also be available at the town hall meetings for extended periods of time to assist individuals with filing claims under the EEOICPA.

The EEOICPA provides compensation and medical benefits to employees who became ill as a result of working in the nuclear weapons industry. An employee who is included in a designated SEC group or class of employees, and who is diagnosed with one of 22 specified cancers, may receive a presumption of causation under the act. The new SEC class of former employees at Area IV of the SSFL includes all employees of the U.S. Department of Energy, its predecessor agencies, and Department of Energy contractors and subcontractors who worked in any area of Area IV of the SSFL for at least 250 workdays from Jan. 1, 1955, through Dec. 31, 1958, or in combination with workdays within other classes of employees in the SEC. Survivors of qualified Energy Department employees and that department’s contractor or subcontractor employees who were employed at Area IV of the SSFL may also be entitled to benefits.

For additional information about the meetings or to schedule an appointment for claim-filing assistance, please contact the Labor Department’s California Resource Center toll-free at 866-606-6302. These meetings are open to the public and pre-registration is not required.
