White House Monthly Call on Disability — Conference Call

The White House conducts monthly disability outreach calls to update the public on disability issues and to hear from constituents. Visit the White House website if you would like to receive alerts about these calls and other announcements related to disability policy.

National Dialogue on Transition for Youth with Disabilities — Online Dialogue — May 13-27, 2013

To examine the impact of existing federal regulations and legislation on the successful transition from school to work of youth with disabilities, a free, public online dialogue was held May 13-27, 2013. The U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, Health and Human Services and the Social Security Administration hosted the event and invited policymakers, service providers, advocates, youth with disabilities and others to join the online dialogue to improve transition outcomes for youth with disabilities. The dialogue had 3,246 participants, with 357 ideas submitted.




Higher Education Sector Summit — Boston, MA — September 11, 2012

As part of its ongoing Sector Summit series, the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and Employment and Training Administration (ETA), under the leadership of Assistant Secretaries Kathy Martinez and Jane Oates, partnered with The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) to convene a Higher Education Summit. The Summit explored issues related to the employment and retention of people with disabilities at institutions of higher learning. The Summit consisted of two sessions that were incorporated into CUPA-HR's 2012 Annual Conference and Exhibition held in Boston, Massachusetts on September 11, 2012. More than 70 CUPA professionals attended the sessions.




Persons With Disabilities and Veterans Hiring Fair — Washington, DC — August 8, 2012

The Department of Labor (DOL) sponsored a historic half day Federal Hiring Event for Persons with Disabilities and Veterans. Representatives from DOL agencies reviewed resumes during the event, and invited prospective candidates for interview




Keeping America Competitive: Addressing the Skills Gap in Manufacturing — Atlanta, GA — June 24, 2012

The Manufacturing Sector Summit: "Keeping America Competitive: Addressing the Skills Gap in Manufacturing" was held on June 24, 2012.  The summit was presented by ODEP and DOL's Employment and Training Administration (ETA), under the leadership of Assistant Secretaries Kathy Martinez and Jane Oates. ODEP's Alliance partner, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), was also a sponsor. The half-day event was convened prior to SHRM's 2012 Annual Conference and Exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia. A standing room only crowd of more than 270 participants in human resources at manufacturing companies nationwide attended to hear a diverse cross section of speakers from government, manufacturing, and HR address skills gap solutions such as recruiting and hiring candidates with disabilities, including returning veterans.




ODEP 10th Anniversary Celebration: Real People. Real Impact. — Washington, D.C. — December 14, 2011

Fall 2011 marks a decade since Congress's establishment of ODEP, which created — for the first time — a permanent focus on disability within the context of DOL's work.

On December 14, 2011, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy Kathleen Martinez hosted a celebration of this milestone at the U.S. Department of Labor's Frances Perkins Building in Washington, D.C. Featured speakers included government, disability and employer community leaders, who joined Secretary Solis and Assistant Secretary Martinez in reflecting upon ten years of ODEP's work.




Add Us In National Diversity Forum — Washington, D.C. — August 4, 2011

The Add Us In National Diversity Forum, a follow-up to the Add Us In Expert Strategy Meeting held in February 2011, brought together Add Us In grantees and disability and diversity experts from across the nation to discuss how inclusive policies and practices implemented by large businesses can be adapted for use by small businesses.




Financial Services Workers with Disabilities: Career Trends and Current Practices Summit — Washington, D.C. — July 19, 2011

The Financial Services Workers with Disabilities: Career Trends and Current Practices Summit convened more than 50 employers and human resources professionals from within the financial services sector and disability community leaders to discuss ways to increase ways to increase the hiring, retaining and advancing of qualified workers with disabilities in the financial services industry.




Health Care: Career Trends, Best Practices and Call-to-Action Summit — Chicago, IL — May 17, 2011

The Health Care: Career Trends, Best Practices and Call-to-Action Summit convened diverse professionals, from both clinical and non-clinical settings, and disability community stakeholders to explore strategies for increasing employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities in the health care industry.




HIV/AIDS Employment Roundtable — Washington, D.C. — April 8, 2011

The HIV/AIDS Employment Roundtable brought together more than 50 diverse stakeholders to discuss ways to improve employment outcomes for people with HIV/AIDS. The event marked the first time ODEP gathered thought leaders to focus on this issue.




Add Us In Expert Strategy Meeting — Washington, D.C. — February 23, 2011

The Add Us In Expert Strategy meeting engaged national thought leaders from the business, disability and diversity communities to discuss ODEP's Add Us In initiative, which seeks to identify replicable strategies for promoting full inclusion of people with disabilities within America's diverse workforce.




ADA 20th Anniversary Celebration — Washington, D.C. — July 30, 2010

The U.S. Department of Labor's ADA 20th Anniversary celebration marked the induction of two disability leaders, Justin Dart, Jr. and Helen Keller, into the Labor Hall of Fame, as well as speeches by officials from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and Congress.




Lights, Camera, Access! — Los Angeles, California — July 10, 2010

Lights, Camera Access! brought together representatives from the entertainment and disability advocacy communities to discuss strategies for improving representation — in terms of both number and accurate portrayal — of people with disabilities in the arts and media.




Now is the Time! Federal Hiring Event for People with Disabilities — Washington, D.C. — April 26, 2010

Now is the Time! was a first-of-its-kind Federal hiring event for people with disabilities in Washington, D.C., cosponsored by ODEP and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). More than 5,000 people submitted resumes to apply to attend the event, and 35 Federal agencies were represented.




A New Day: We're Listening/Listening Tour — Dallas, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston — January 2010

"A New Day: We're Listening" was a series of six Listening Sessions to collect information and comments about best practices and key issues to be addressed by Federal workforce systems regarding the employment of people with disabilities.
