#InclusionWorks: Start the Countdown to National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Businesses in all industries take note: National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is just four months away, and there's no better time than now to start planning NDEAM festivities centered around this year's theme: #InclusionWorks.
NDEAM is a nationwide campaign celebrating the skills and talents that workers with disabilities bring to our workplaces. Although not observed until October, the theme is announced each spring to provide ample time for advance event planning and this year's social media focused theme presents great opportunity to spread the NDEAM spirit far and wide.
Successful companies already know that inclusion works, proudly making it a core corporate value. And they know that disability diversity is a key component of a truly inclusive workplace. This year's free NDEAM poster available for mail order and for download captures the multi-faceted nature of the #InclusionWorks message, illustrating that inclusion works for workers, for employers, for opportunity and for innovation.
Beyond displaying the NDEAM poster, there are numerous ways for employers to take part in NDEAM. The campaign's national sponsor, the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, offers a wide range of ideas to inspire you. For example, businesses can conduct disability awareness training for employees or express support for NDEAM through their social media activities using the #InclusionWorks hashtag. The possibilities are endless, and materials to help you get started can be found in ODEP's NDEAM Resource Toolbox.
NDEAM's true value lies in the many creative events and activities that take place at the grassroots level across the nation each year. By supporting it, employers play an important role in advancing its spirit, both in October and throughout the year.
