$1.5M grant to assist workers affected by H.J. Heinz Co. layoffs
in Pocatello, Idaho, announced by US Labor Department

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,593,803 National Emergency Grant to provide re-employment services to approximately 330 workers affected by the closure of the H.J. Heinz Co. LP facility, located in Pocatello, Idaho.

"This federal grant will help Idahoans receive the job training and assistance needed to obtain new middle-class jobs," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. "During this time of transition for these workers, this support is vital to helping them continue to climb the ladder of success."

Awarded to the Idaho Department of Labor, this grant will provide assistance to the workers in conjunction with the services they will receive as a result of their eligibility for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits. This grant, along with services available through the TAA program, will be used to provide the affected workers with the training and supportive services they need to successfully find employment.

In November 2013, the H.J. Heinz Co. announced the closure of its Pocatello plant, affecting approximately 400 employees.

Of the $1,593,803 announced today, $320,400 will be released initially. Additional funding, up to the amount approved, will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
