WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,816,666 National Emergency Grant to assist approximately 450 workers affected by the closure of International Paper Co.'s facility located in Courtland, Ala.
"When an employer like the International Paper facility in Courtland closes, it impacts workers, families and communities," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. "This federal National Emergency Grant offers assistance to lessen these negative effects by providing individuals with the opportunity to gain the skills needed for new careers in high-demand occupations."
This grant, awarded to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, will provide assistance to many of these workers in conjunction with the services they will receive as a result of their eligibility for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits. This grant and the TAA program will be used to provide the affected workers with the training and case management services they need to successfully find employment in their area.
Of the $1,816,666 announced today, $896,100 will be released initially. Additional funding, up to the amount approved, will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.
National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
