Recent US Department of Labor case findings in New Hampshire, Vermont mirror national increases in child labor violations, young workers’ injuries

MANCHESTER, NH Each year, employers hire millions of young people in the food services, retail, recreation and construction industries to add staff to meet their labor needs during peak periods. Federal court forces Chicago restaurant owner to comply with subpoena requesting documents for US Department of Labor wage investigation

CHICAGO – After more than two years, a Chicago restaurant owner has finally complied with an administrative subpoena to provide documentation for a U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division investigation. The compliance comes after a federal judge held Wilson Torres, owner of La Bomba Food Restaurant Inc., in contempt and confined him to one night in jail and ordered him to pay $40,500 in fines.

US Department of Labor recovers $131.8M for Wells Fargo 401(k) participants after investigation finds plan overpaid for company stock

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a settlement with Wells Fargo and Company and Wells Fargo Bank and GreatBanc Trust Company – a plan trustee – that recovers more than $131.8 million for the retirement plan’s participants after a department investigation found that, from 2013 through 2018, the fund overpaid for company stock purchased for the plan.

US Department of Labor proposes $303K in penalties for Middletown foundry for willfully exposing employees to workplace hazards

MIDDLETOWN, NJ – An investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration found that a Middletown foundry willfully exposed workers to numerous safety and health hazards, citing the company for 14 violations with proposed penalties of $303,106.

OSHA opened an inspection on March 9, 2022, at the Engineered Precision Casting Co. – a steel and aluminum foundry – in response to a complaint.

Illinois trucking repair company cited for exposing workers to confined space hazards after worker fatally injured inspecting trailer

LEMONT, IL – AB & R Repair of Lemont faces $326K in OSHA penalties 48-year-old worker entered a tanker-trailer in Lemont to inspect it as part of an annual U.S. Department of Transportation requirement and was overcome from exposure to bleach and chlorine gas. The worker was found unconscious in the tanker-trailer, he later died of his injuries.
