Leslie B. Kramerich has assumed the position of Acting Assistant Secretary of the Labor Department's Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration (PWBA). For the last year, Kramerich has been PWBA's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy.

She became Acting Assistant Secretary on Dec. 6 upon resignation of then Assistant Secretary Richard McGahey and will remain in the post until a permanent candidate is appointed.

Toys "R" Us will pay a $200,000 fine and check all 706 of its retail outlets for compliance with child labor laws as part of an agreement it has reached with the U.S. Labor Department.

The U.S. Department of Labor has obtained a settlement with officials of the Rolling Meadows, Ill. accounting and auditing firm of Whitfield and Reninger, Ltd., requiring them to restore $20,406 in principal and interest to two profit sharing plan participants and to pay $4,081 in civil monetary penalties.

The U. S. Department of Labor has sued the trustees of the John E. Healy & Sons Pension Plan of New Castle, Del. for making over $450,000 in improper loans with plan money.

The U.S. Labor Department has obtained a partial settlement in its case involving an Anniston, Ala. non-profit corporation’s 401(k) profit sharing plan.

The action will result in $9,000 being recouped for the plan and will resolve a restitution issue concerning employee contributions of $8,331.82 not remitted to the plan for the period of April 30, 1997 to June 30, 1997, as well as interest which would have accrued.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration and Internal Revenue Service today extended the deadline for filing annual returns/reports (Form 5500 series) due to Hurricanes Floyd and Irene.

The extension applies to employee benefit plans, banks and insurance companies located in the counties designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as federal disaster areas because of the hurricanes.
