My fellow citizens, over the last year the Department of Labor has worked aggressively to ensure that we provide workers with the assistance they need to find good jobs and invest in their future.

And to keep our commitment of providing “Good Jobs for Everyone,” I am proud to announce that we are awarding $150 million in “Pathways Out of Poverty” grants to organizations and states across the country.

These grants will make it possible for persons who are living below or near the poverty level find employment in green industries.

These industries offer many potential opportunities for individuals to learn new skills, find a job, and advance in a career.

Today’s grants target:

  •  Nonprofit organizations, such as community and faith-based organizations;
  • The public workforce investment system;
  • The education and training community;
  • Labor organizations; and
  • Employers and industry-related organizations.

Eligible participants for these programs are:

  • Unemployed individuals;
  • High school dropouts;
  • Individuals with a criminal record; and
  • Disadvantaged individuals within areas of high poverty.

These grants are part of a larger Recovery Act initiative — totaling $500 million — to fund workforce development projects promoting economic growth by preparing workers for careers in the energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors.

My focus is helping Americans get back to work. We are working every day to sustain economic growth and spur renewed hiring for the millions of Americans who need and want work.

And these kinds of investments will help all workers succeed…while laying the foundation for our country’s long-term recovery.

Thank you.
