A Moment in Black History

The U.S. Department of Labor Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), Southeast Region invites you to come celebrate Black History Month with us and hear real time historic moments from an original Tuskegee Airman, Retired Lt. Colonel Harry Stewart.

Harry Thaddeus Stewart Jr. was born July 4, 1924, in Newport News, Virginia. Lt. Colonel Stewart is a retired U.S. Army Air Forces officer, a Distinguished Flying Cross recipient and a combat fighter pilot within the 332nd Fighter Group, best known as the all-African American Tuskegee Airmen.

Lt. Colonel Stewart shot down three German aircraft in one day. He is one of only four Tuskegee Airmen to have earned three victories in a single day of aerial combat. Lt. Colonel Stewart was also a member of the all-African American 332nd Fighter Group Weapons pilot team that won the U.S. Air Force’s inaugural "Top Gun" team competition in 1949. Lt. Colonel Stewart, along with George Hardy and fellow 1949 Top Gun winner James H. Harvey, are among the last surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen.

In addition to hearing from Lt. Col. Stewart, you will hear from Mr. Ramone Crowe, who is on the Board of Directors with the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum and Mr. Brian Smith, President of the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum, where information will be shared about the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum regarding its origin, purpose, what individuals may witness while visiting the museum and the necessity of the museum.
