Uncle Tom's Cabin

Author: Harriet Beecher Stower

Year Published: 1852

What Others are Saying:

  • This book was, according to people at the time, instrumental in rousing people in the North to oppose slavery, to the extent they were willing to go to war to end it.  Putting a stop to slavery changed EVERYTHING about how work was done in a very large part of this country.  The end of slavery forced the rebuilding of an entire social structure and moved it away from a quasi-feudal structure toward a more modern, truly capitalistic system.
