47000 Water Transportation Occupations
This category includes occupations concerned with the operation and maintenance of ocean-going cargo vessels of 5,000 or more power tons and tankers of 12,000 or more power tons. Excluded are integrated tug-barges, liquefied natural gas tankers, passenger ships and vessels operating solely on the Great Lakes or other inland waters. Included are oceanographic research, oil exploration, and cable laying and repair vessels. Workers are assigned into one of three departments - deck, engine, or steward. The deck department is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the ship and the care of its cargo, excluding machinery and mechanical controls. The engine department is responsible for the operation of the ship's engines and all machinery and mechanical control systems. The steward department prepares and serves all meals, cleans and maintains the living quarters of officers and guests, and provides linens and sanitary supplies.
