US Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division, Mexican Consulate in Houston to sponsor Labor Rights Week Aug. 27–31

Partnership agreements to be signed Monday, Aug. 27

HOUSTON -- The Houston District Office of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division will join the Mexican Consulate in Houston to sponsor the fifth annual Labor Rights Week, Aug. 27-31. This year’s theme is “Protecting Labor Rights is Everyone’s Responsibility.”

To kick off the week, a partnership agreement will be signed between the Wage and Hour Division and the Consulate General of Mexico at 10 a.m. CDT on Monday. The focus of the agreement is to provide Mexican migrant workers in Texas with information and guidance concerning their rights under federal laws.

Also on Monday, the Wage and Hour Division will renew its partnership with the consulate to continue the Justice and Equality in the Workplace Program. The program’s goal is to educate the area’s Hispanic community about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. The partnership is in its 11th year and has served as a model for similar efforts throughout the country.

Daily presentations by Labor Department staff will cover the following topics: agricultural employment, including the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act and the Immigration Control and Reform Act’s H-2A and H-2B requirements; and the Fair Labor Standards Act’s minimum wage and overtime requirements. Staff will provide compliance assistance materials, answer questions and take complaints.

The events are open press. For interviews, contact Elizabeth Todd or Juan Rodriguez in the department’s Office of Public Affairs in Dallas using the information above.
