US Labor Department to offer free compliance seminar Aug. 16 in Akron, Ohio, on employing workers with disabilities under FLSA's Section 14(c)


AKRON, Ohio -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division will offer a free compliance seminar on Thursday, Aug. 16, to assist employers and community rehabilitation programs in complying with the requirements of Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

“The Federal Compliance Seminar: Special Minimum Wages to Workers with Disabilities Under Section 14(c) of the FLSA,” will be held from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. EDT at the John F. Seiberling Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, Level B3 Conference Room, 2 S. Main St., Akron, Ohio 44308. Guardians and family members of people with disabilities also are encouraged to attend. The event will be open to the media.

“The Department of Labor is committed to ensuring that our stakeholders – including employers, community rehabilitation programs, advocates, workers and other interested parties – fully understand the rules that apply to employing workers with disabilities at special minimum wages,” said Nancy J. Leppink, deputy administrator of the Wage and Hour Division. “We are pleased to provide this free seminar and to offer this training, which is a key component of the department’s ongoing effort to foster good jobs and meaningful employment through increased awareness and enhanced compliance with our regulations.”

Topics to be covered include becoming certified in Section 14(c), performing prevailing wage surveys and conducting time studies. Topics also will include areas in which Wage and Hour Division staff have found compliance problems in past years, such as calculating commensurate wages and accurately tracking hours worked. Additionally, representatives from the department’s Office of Disability Employment Policy will be on hand to discuss new initiatives designed to help people with significant disabilities achieve integrated, full-wage employment. Finally, the seminar will include a round-table discussion for participants to share challenges they face regarding special minimum wage certificates, as well as best practices they have developed to remain in compliance.
