US Department of Laborís Wage and Hour Division to participate in Labor Rights Week to be sponsored by Mexican Consulate in Chicago Aug. 29-Sept. 2

Consulates of Guatemala and El Salvador also participating in fourth annual event

CHICAGO -- The Chicago District Office of the U.S. Department of Laborís Wage and Hour Division will participate in the fourth annual Labor Rights Week, Aug. 29 to Sept. 2, to be sponsored by the Mexican Consulate in Chicago.

The Labor Department has participated in the program since its inception and is pleased to continue working with the Mexican Consulate, as well as the consulates of Guatemala and El Salvador, to inform workers of their rights to receive the minimum wage, overtime pay for any hours over 40 in a regular workweek and compensation for all hours worked.

Throughout the week, individuals may visit the Mexican Consulate daily between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. CDT to receive information from Wage and Hour Division investigators, who also will be available at several evening events throughout the Chicago metro area to further discuss labor laws, answer questions and take complaints.

The goal of Labor Rights Week is to improve awareness of labor laws and the Wage and Hour Divisionís mission, and to provide information that will lead to enhanced compliance, particularly for low-wage, vulnerable workers. Compliance assistance materials will be provided to employers.

To kick off Labor Rights Week nationwide, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis will welcome ambassadors from Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic to Washington, D.C., for a historical signing of joint declarations and letters of arrangement to support workersí rights. That event will be broadcast live on the Internet at on Monday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m. EDT.
