US Labor Department, Consulate General of Mexico sign agreement Feb. 19 to protect rights of migrant Mexican nationals

Workers in Texas, New Mexico, to benefit

EL PASO, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Laborís Wage and Hour Division and the Consulate General of Mexico will sign an agreement on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. MST to provide Mexican nationals in El Paso with access to labor law information and guidance about their rights as workers under federal law.

The signing event will be attended by the Wage and Hourís Dallas Regional Office Deputy Administrator Betty Campbell and Consul General Jacob Prado Gonzalez.

This agreement establishes a collaborative relationship to provide Mexican nationals in Texas and in New Mexico with information, guidance and access to education and training resources to help them exercise their workplace rights Ė particularly with regard to reducing violations of the minimum wage, overtime, record keeping, child labor, safe housing and transportation provisions of the laws and regulations administered and enforced by WHD, regardless of their immigration status. The parties will work together to educate Mexican nationals about their rights as workers in the United States and the responsibilities of employers under the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, and the H-2A and H-2B programs under the Immigration and Nationality Act.
