US Labor Department to participate in Labor Rights Week with the Chinese Community Center to protect rights of workers in Houston, Aug. 30

HOUSTON -- The Department of Laborís Wage and Hour Division will participate in the first Labor Rights Week event hosted by The Information Group for Asian American Rights Aug. 30 in Houston.

The goal of Labor Rights Week is to improve awareness of labor laws and to provide information that will lead to enhanced compliance, particularly for low wage at-risk workers. As part of the event, staff will provide information about the Wage and Hour Division and the Fair Labor Standards Act. The information will be provided in Chinese and in Vietnamese. Opening remarks will be provided by Texas State Representative Gene Wu and Houston City Council Member Al Hoang.

The Labor Departmentís Wage and Hour Division, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have participated in the TIGAAR program since its inception in 2003 to inform the Asian community of their rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
