As a divorced mother with two children, a 17-year old
daughter and an 11-year old son, Kathleen was looking for an opportunity to
develop her computer skills in order to further her career. While working at
her company's helpdesk, she set her sites on obtaining Microsoft Office
Specialist Certification (MOUS) in order to advance within the company. With
these skills, her company could promote her to a Microsoft Office instructor.
Kathleen, like many single mothers, needed an training opportunity that would fit into her demanding schedule. She found that opportunity with the Online Learning Demonstration Project at the Bergen County Workforce Development Office in New Jersey. With the flexibility to work on courses on her own laptop anytime at home, Kathleen juggled family and career without the hassle of arranging for child care and transportation.
Her employer was not only a great supporter of Kathleen's ambitions, but also supported the overall program by donating twenty external mouses for participants to use with the laptops they also received through the program. At her recognition ceremony, Kathleen explained "It is not easy juggling your day to day activities with your children, working a full time job and finding time to study, let alone all your household chores. However, being in this program has proven to me that when you are a single mom, you can still obtain knowledge and advance in your career."
