Secretary Elaine L. Chao meets with
the Regional Administrators of the Women's Bureau
|
As you can see from the preceding articles, the Women's
Bureau is engaged in a number of demonstration initiatives over the coming
fiscal year, some of them in your region. In addition to releasing "How To"
manuals for the Women with Disabilities Entrepreneur and GEM-SET projects
during FY 2004, Women's Bureau (WB) Regional Administrators (RA) are busy
implementing a number of demonstration projects that will start in the fall and
early winter. Four of the projects capitalize on lessons learned during three
years of GEM-SET.
Project Description A
financial security and retirement savings project "Las Mujeres y el
Dinero" "Women and Money" will provide workshops and
conferences during the next year in each of ten regions. The kickoff event is
scheduled for Phoenix, Arizona on October 23rd. For more information on the
Hispanic Literacy project, contact Jenny Erwin in the Region IX office, and for
the agenda for the kickoff event at
www.hispanicwomen.org.
The second project stems from "lessons learned" in GEM-SET and relates
to the unique situation of young women in immigrant families. GEM-SET
III is led by Nancy Chun of the Region V Chicago office and will serve
primarily Hispanic and Asian immigrant women in 5 regions. Please contact
Region V or the web site at
www.GEM-SET.org.
The third demonstration project, GEM-Nursing seeks to
encourage young women and men in six regions to consider nursing as a
profession. For more information call Jacqueline Cooke in Region I or Mary
Murphree in Region II, or visit the website at:
www.gem-nursing.org.
Another financial security and retirement savings project that is
accessible via the web and at six learning institutions in six of our regions
is called "WI$E UP" and is designed to appeal to twenty to thirty
year old women. For more information, call Beverly Lyle in Region VI.
Workplace Flexibility strategies are being addressed in
six regions through a Corporate Mentor-Women Business Owner collaboration using
a combination of real time and virtual conferences. Contact Karen Furia and the
Region X staff for more information.
The Employer-Driven Older Worker Program will reach out to
older Hispanic and Asian American women through basic computer and life skills
training. Upon graduation, these women could apply for entry-level career
ladder positions with CVS. Contact Beverly Lyle in Region VI and/or Nancy Chen
in Region V for more information.
The Women with Disabilities Entrepreneurship Project, will
reach 40 disabled women in 4 regions. This project is currently in its second
year. Contact Delores Crockett in Region IV for additional information.
Another project is operated by Non-traditional Employment for Women
(NEW). This project recruits and prepares women for work in the construction
trades at Ground Zero. It attracts employed women who want to
enter the trades and provides pre-apprenticeship training at night and on
Saturdays. Contact Mary Murphree in Region II for more information.
We encourage you to look at the chart below and see which initiatives
are relevant to you. You can contact the Regional office in your area for more
information.
