 Meeting with
International Women Delegations
As part of its
outreach and advocacy mission, the Women's Bureau continues to meet with
international groups to discuss and share initiatives to help women.

Director Shinae Chun and the Women's Bureau staff regularly
meet with international women delegations that visit the United States for
research and ideas to implement or enhance programs that address the unique
needs of women in their own countries. Highlights of such gatherings
include:
- On March 19, Jane Walstedt of the Women's Bureau participated in a
DOL roundtable with a delegation from Shanghai, China on the issue of
trafficking in women and children. These visitors are participating in a
research project organized by the East China University of Politics and Law.
The purpose of this nine-month research project is to develop recommendations
for new and amended legislation to combat the growing problem of
trafficking.
- On March 5, Director Chun and Diane Faulkner of the Women's Bureau
met with several visitors from Indonesia to discuss Women's Bureau initiatives
(see photo above).
- Also on March 5, Jane Walstedt, Michael Williams, and Suzanne
Burnette of the Women's Bureau met with the First Secretary (Labor) in the
Economic Section of the Embassy of Japan. The Embassy was representing the
Equal Employment Policy Division, Equal Employment, Children and Families
Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW). The Equal
Employment Policy Division is doing a study for the MHLW on reforming Japan's
Law for Equal Opportunities and Treatment Between Men and Women in
Employment.
- On February 12, Jane Walstedt represented the Women's Bureau in a
Department of Labor roundtable discussion with six officials from Armenia on
human trafficking. The delegation is part of a national task force focused on
combating human trafficking in Armenia.
- And late last year, Director Chun and Diane Faulkner met with ten key
trade union leaders from Russia, a women's delegation from Jilin Province,
China, and a woman trade union leader from Mexico to discuss Women's Bureau
initiatives.
The Women's Bureau will continue to support women across
the globe, and the work of international women's organizations in regards to
the most pressing issues they face in the 21st century global economy.
