Story Continued

Recently Regional Director Beverly Lyle and Special Assistant Beth Gable spoke to a group of women in Albuquerque, New Mexico about the Women's Bureau's initiatives to advance working women. The occasion was the Estrella Awards, given out by the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women that honor individuals or organizations advancing women in science, engineering, technology, and other non-traditional occupations.

Some of the awards presented were:

  • The first Horizon Award was presented on behalf of the Women's Bureau to Dr. Julia Phillips of Sandia Labs. Dr. Phillips has shown a lifelong love of science education, and she plays an inspiring role in encouraging girls to pursue science or engineering. She enthusiastically provides flexible work arrangements for her women staff, and she enjoys her role of mentoring young women.

  • 5 Trailblazer Awards to women who serve as role models in non-traditional occupations. The nominees were selected on the basis of their leadership and proven ability to blaze new frontiers in typically male-dominated careers.

  • A Vision Award to Share Your Care for implementing innovative solutions to the problems of balancing family and work. The agency has instituted a policy allowing employees to "give" their sick time to a worker who has an extended absence need as a result of health problems.

  • A Partner in Change Award to Valliant Enterprises for providing and promoting opportunities or training for displaced homemakers, single mothers, or other women in transition. In August 2001, the company opened a branch of their imaging and archiving business through the Corrections Industries at the New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility in Grants, New Mexico.

The Women's Bureau will continue to encourage women to pursue careers in the rewarding, challenging and higher paying fields of science, engineering, and technology.
