GEM-Nursing
Tamika and Helen, two GEM-Nursing participants,
answered questions, distributed literature, and signed up interested students
at their high school's bustling Health Fair. More than 800 students
participated in the Massachusetts event. GEM-Nursing (Group E-Mentoring in
Nursing) is a web-based project developed by the Women's Bureau that links
students between 15 and 21 with mentors in the nursing profession. GEM-Nursing
partners and participants across the country contribute to events like the
Health Fair in order to educate their peers about nursing careers. The Women's
Bureau has focused on nursing as a worker shortage occupation. The Bureau of
Labor Statistics projects 1.1 million job openings for Registered Nurses alone
by 2012 with wages above average.
