Event: Reimagining the City-University Connection: Integrating Research, Policy, and Practice

Description: “Reimagining the City-University Connection” will advance a new kind of collaboration involving mutually beneficial research and policy initiatives in greater Boston. Leading scholars and senior practitioners will explore accomplishments of and lessons from notable university/city partnerships. Symposium panels will address four areas: preventing and responding to violence; governance through new technologies; improving urban education; and the challenges of implementation. The symposium, sponsored by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study in collaboration with the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston and the City of Boston, will create opportunities to strengthen existing collaborations and to develop novel ones that cross academic disciplines and administrative boundaries.

Event: The 4th Jean Baker Miller Memorial Lecture: Fighting Like a Girl: How Girls Can and Do Make a Difference

Description: The 4th Jean Baker Miller Memorial Lecture will feature Lyn Mikel Brown, Ed.D. Dr. Brown is a mom, professor, and community activist. She is Professor of Education at Colby College in Waterville, Maine and co-creator of Hardy Girls, Healthy Women. With clarity and brilliance, Lyn Brown explores girls strengths and resilience. She helps us understand the importance of anger and resistance in girls’ development and encourages girls to raise their voices, to speak their needs and share their wisdom.

Event: SE/MA STEM Network Meeting. Employers & Educators Bridging the STEM Gap: A Conversation on Partnership

Description: Meet with a broad pool of regional stakeholdres from K-12 schools, higher education, economic development, and business & indsutry to discuss: What are the skills/knowledge that SE/MA STEM employers need in their employees; How have industries reached out to educators to promote STEM skills; What do educators need from the business world to support the development of STEM skills and interest in their students; How can educators (K-12 & Higher Education) and employers work together toward the common goal of fostering students STEM interest and readiness? Presentations from business and education, roundtable discussions, and networking are highlights of the event. Educational resources will be available from exhibitors such as: Bioteach, Mass Clean Energy Center, Amgen Wallace, Urban Education Institute, Federal Aviation Administration, Institute for Human Design, and National Institutes of Health. Attendance is FREE but registration is required. PDPs will be available for educators.

Event: Green Jobs Training Program

Description:
The Hispanic Family Center is recruiting, preparing, and training qualified candidates to fill green jobs in the Southern New Jersey area. Enrollment in the 187 hour Green Jobs Training Program at HFC offers a path to the following careers in Energy Efficiency: Air Sealer, Insulator and energy efficiency assistant (auditing assistant).
The 8-week training program includes:
- Hands-on vocational skills and work site training
- General math and verbal skills
- OSHA workplace safety training (10 hour course)
- Environmental awareness
- Conflict resolution
- Financial management
- Job readiness
- Internship/employment placement with an industry partner
Program Requirements :
- Be at least 20 years of age or older
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Remain drug free throughout the entire program and submit to drug testing
- Demonstrate a legitimate interest in pursuing a career in the targeted industries
- Fluent in English
- Pass the Test for Adult Basic Education (8 th grade level in verbal and math)
- Undergo a criminal background check
Candidates that meet the above requirements are interviewed by program staff to determine acceptance.
