Assistant Secretary Keith Kelly
Keith Kelly was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate to be the Assistant Secretary of the Veteransí Employment and Training Service (VETS) in the U.S. Department of Labor. He was sworn in on January 22, 2013 and as the Assistant Secretary, Mr. Kelly reports to the Secretary of Labor. VETS serves as the focal point for veterans employment by preparing military service members for transition to civilian employment, providing veterans the services to assist them with getting good jobs, and protecting their employment rights.
Since 2005, Kelly has been the Commissioner of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry, where he previously served as the Administrator of the Unemployment Insurance Division. From 2009 to 2010, Kelly served as Chair and Vice Chair of the Veterans Affairs Committee of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies. Kelly was also appointed by President Clinton as Administrator of the Farm Service Agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C. Prior to his appointment by President Clinton, Mr. Kelly served as the Director of the Montana Department of Agriculture, and as its Deputy Secretary of State. He also served as the first Director of the Arizona Department of Agriculture for 7 years.
A combat veteran, Kelly was awarded the Combat Infantrymanís Badge and Bronze Star for service with the Armyís 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He is a graduate of Red Lodge High School, and received his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Business and his Master's degree in Economics from Montana State University. Mr. Kelly and his wife, the former Norma Jean Walsh of Butte, Montana are the parents of 4 children and 5 grandchildren.
