Bellevue Hospital Center

The morgue at the hospital was so overcrowded with victims' bodies that makeshift morgues were created on a nearby pier on the East River.

Opened in 1736, Bellevue Hospital was the oldest publi hospital in the U.S. and treated many of the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, March 25, 1911. When its morgue became overrun with people trying to identify loved ones, Bellevue established a temporary morgue on a near by pier.
