US Labor Department issues statement regarding National Day of Remembrance for nuclear weapons workers
WASHINGTON Rachel P. Leiton, director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation, today issued the following statement regarding the designation of Oct. 30, 2009, as a National Day of Remembrance for all nuclear weapons workers in America:
“The U.S. Department of Labor today is expressing gratitude for the hard work and dedication of the many workers who served this nation by building its nuclear defense programs. The country owes a debt of gratitude and appreciation to these workers, who provided a valuable service to the country. And for those workers who sacrificed their health during the course of their employment, the department is working to ease the financial hardships on them and their families through the timely administration of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).
“The EEOICPA was created on Oct. 30, 2000, to provide federal compensation and medical benefits to those individuals who became ill as a result of working in the nuclear weapons industry. To show the Labor Department’s support, department representatives will be taking part in several of the scheduled National Day of Remembrance events around the country.”
